What is the /θ/ Sound?

The /θ/ sound is a voiceless sound. You make it by placing your tongue between your teeth and blowing air out. It sounds like the "th" in:

  • "Think"
  • "Bath"
  • "Path"

What is the /ð/ Sound?

The /ð/ sound is a voiced sound. You make it by placing your tongue between your teeth and vibrating your vocal cords. It sounds like the "th" in:

  • "This"
  • "Bathe"
  • "Father"

Now try reading these Examples:

  • /θ/: "thin," "thought," "both"
  • /ð/: "that," "the," "with"

In this activity, you will practice words with both /θ/ and /ð/ sounds.

Try to decide if the sound you hear is /θ/ (like "think") or /ð/ (like "this").  Let's get started!
